Mukwa Monthly

Boozhoo/Hello!

The Mukwa team has been hard at work over the past month, focusing on organizing and enhancing our knowledge base. Here’s a recap of our recent activities!

Bear Clan: We’ve been actively collaborating with Minnesotan Coalitions on the Rights of Manoomin, which is not only a vital food source for the Anishinaabe communities but also a sacred plant deeply rooted in their prophecies.

Movement Education: Our team continues to support the NoDAPL Grassroots Movement by providing essential aid and technical assistance. We’ve been attending three coalition meetings each week, with two of our members dedicated to this effort, maximizing our current capacity.

Mutual Aid: The Mukwa Board has chosen to support the Summer of Resistance Block Party on August 24, 2024, from 2 PM to 5 PM CST at 28th Ave & 40th St., Kenosha, WI 53410. This family-friendly event will offer back-to-school supplies, mutual aid resources, a free community meal, and much more.

Funding: We experienced our most successful month for donations, bringing in $710 from grassroots supporters. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Katie C., Amy B., Andy P., and Jay W. for your generous contributions. Last month, we submitted two grant applications—one is pending, while the other was denied. Chairwoman Gina and Admin Joey met with the Niibi Center to explore collaboration and future funding opportunities.

A special thanks to the Indigenous Environmental Network and the Movement Training Network for helping to send a significant portion of our team to the Protecting Mother Earth Conference hosted by IEN from August 1-4, 2024, in Cherokee, North Carolina. It was an incredible experience for our team, filled with valuable insights into Indigenous organizing and the challenges faced by our allied organizations across Turtle Island.

While we are in the process of seeking long-term funding to ensure the sustainability and growth of our initiatives, your support at this moment is absolutely crucial. It plays a vital role in enabling us to maintain our current programs and continue making a positive impact in our community. Your contributions not only help us bridge the gap during this transitional period but also empower us to pursue our mission with dedication and resilience. We deeply appreciate your commitment and generosity, which allow us to keep moving forward and strive for a brighter future."

In solidarity,

E. Joey Oppegaard-Peltier III, Admin, Mukwa
