Mukwa
Mukwa envisions a decolonized future where no systems of caste and oppression exist and all beings are thriving for all generations to come.
Mukwa was launched in March 2024, and since then, we have expanded into a multi-state network of Bear Den Organizers throughout Turtle Island, beginning in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, and Illinois. We are dedicated to addressing the critical issues affecting our communities as we unite the 7th Generation in the mission to safeguard Mother Earth.
Our four programs and their associated projects are designed to foster community and address critical issues.
In the Expect Us Program, we recognize the urgency of our situation and mobilize our resources and community to combat the despair affecting us. This program includes two key projects: Resist! Organize! Assert! Rise! R.O.A.R.! which tackles the pressing environmental, cultural, and community threats posed by oil and fossil fuel pipelines. The second project, Momma Bears (MMIWR+), focuses on the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women and children, providing essential resources and empowering the community.
The Bear Clan Program emphasizes our role of living in the right relationship with Mother Earth. Through community forums, education, and direct organizing, we strive to inspire our communities to advocate for and protect what we hold sacred. This program encompasses four projects: Guardians of Turtle Island, which advocates for the Rights of Nature; Gichigamiminisinoowag "Lake Superior Warriors," dedicated to resisting extractive projects like mining while sharing Indigenous leadership and cultural knowledge; À:we Advocacy "Clean Water," which fights to protect our sacred waters through rehabilitation and advocacy efforts; and Just Transitioning for the 7th Generation, where Mukwa focuses on fostering Indigenous leadership of land and animals to create a sustainable economy that builds community resilience and wealth.
Through our Roots Mutual Aid program, Mukwa embodies the core principle of mutual aid rooted in Indigenous and Black resistance. By providing food and resources, we address the intersectional traumas that connect our communities to their foundations.
With our Movement Education program, Mukwa seeks to cultivate a collaborative educational community that enables us to offer a wide range of diverse learning materials, which are integrated across all our other programs and initiatives. Mukwa also strives to create a weekly peer-to-peer learning environment where individuals can exchange knowledge and essential skills for community building, organizing, and beyond.
